I’ve been locked in the studio for the past few days working on canvases and nature inspired jewelry.  I have SOOOO much to share, I don’t really know where to start.  But here goes…gonna go ahead and kick things off with this natural beauty that happens to be one of my FAVORITES!  It’s titled ‘PERCHED’.

birds branches

To create one for yourself…You’ll need:

  • A branch 1/4″ in diameter that has an offshoot.
  • Miniature bird (found at a hobby store with the miniature dollhouse supplies — can purchase a package of about 10 for $2.99)
  • 20-22 Gauge Wire
  • 1/16″ Drill Bit
  • Desired Cording
  • Head pin
  • stain/and or wax, if desired
  • sanding block

Use Anvil pruners to trim your branch down to about 2 and a half to three inches long.
Sand body of branch lightly and ends to smooth.
Apply a stain/wax or clear wax to create a smooth finish on your branch.
Carefully drill a hole in the center of your bird using the 1/16″ drill bit.  (I like using the drill press because it gives me more control, but you can use your dremel or a regular hand held drill, too)
Using the same drill bit, drill a hole through the branch where you’d like your bird positioned.
Create a ‘nest’ using a 10″ piece of wire.  Simply twist, turn and tuck your wire ends to create a whimsical nest shape that your bird will rest on comfortably.
Slip your head pin through your bird, your nest and the branch…add a small bead to the bottom, trim and curl end to secure tightly.
Drill holes on each end of your branch using a slightly larger bit to accommodate the cording, jute, or leather you’ve chosen to hang it with… knot to secure and add closing clasps of your choice.
Can also create versions without a ‘nest’.

Wear proudly.  I know I am!

I will continue to add a few more nature inspired pieces so you too can discover all the beautiful ways to wear a branch.

Cheers to naturally fashionable accessories!
