I played around with some leather stockings for the holidays and I must say, they’ve rolled out to be a favorite.  They’re relatively easy to create (just a bit time consuming with the hand stitching on the ones out of the thicker leathers, but certainly a project anyone can tackle and not a lot of tools or supplies are needed, which is an added plus.) Their classic style and durability will make for a long lasting holiday treasure.

The extra version/other option for this project that didn’t make it to the official project page was the repurposed coat alternative.

These stockings took up an interesting turn because you could really play up the features on the coat….buttons, belts, pockets, etc. LOVE the repurposing element and the unique looks that can be created.  They’re also a little less time consuming since you can simply stitch them together on the sewing machine.

You’ll need a long length leather/vinyl coat  (can usually find these dated beauties for little $$ at the different thrift stores).

And from someone who loves to actually WEAR these kinds of coats….I had to think long and hard about which ones I could bear to CUT INTO!

**Be sure to get ones that don’t fit, then you won’t struggle! LOL.

Remove the lining and then strategically place your pattern where you want.  I tried to position it so that the pocket would remain in tact and be usable on the front side of the stocking.  I also made sure I could use the belt loops and the belt as additional elements.

** Remember to flip your pattern over so you get the ‘backside’ of the stocking…otherwise your toe will be facing the wrong way!

You decide whether you want your seams exposed, or on the inside, and then stitch together.  (I stitched wrong sides together and left the seams exposed on the outside for mine)

I cut off the tips of the collar to create my hanger and riveted it in place with doublecap rivets — could also stitch on.

All I can say is….. ‘high style’ stocking, right?!   Fun to make, Fun to hang, FUN TO GIVEAWAY….That’s right, folks…the fun continues because I’m giving one of the repurposed stockings that I  made for the HGTV holiday special away! Just post a ‘stand out’ comment below on why you want to win this sleek beauty, and we’ll pick a winner on Monday and ship it out!

Cheers to doing up your own holiday decor and giving it away!

I love this idea! I don’t really care if I win, but I would love to attempt making a few of these- I am a total spaz, and can’t get the knack of knitting or crocheting but I wanted to make stockings this year- and I could embellish them further with buttons and pins and such- thanks!

I am incredibly drawn to these sassy stockings which would add a funky dimension to my already-hung, knitted stockings – fitting perfectly into my eclectic world. I’m hoping to make most of my gifts this year, and this element of creativity would help keep me going! Either way, I think you’re fabulous and love seeing your new ideas. Thanks for encouraging me to make before I buy! – Traci
