expressive secondhand shopping

October 12, 2010 in Michele's Blog

It probably won’t surprise anyone that the mall isn’t where I do much of my shopping.  When I need to throw together an outfit for an event or a shoot or something, I first look to see what I have, what can I mix up, what can I freshen up with maybe a creative revision or some fun accessories.

If nothing fantastic comes out of that, I head to the vintage stores.  Every single thing there is unique.   It’s a true treasure hunt.   It’s for men and women, alike.  You don’t really know what you want until you see it.  The prices are always good and there’s something very soulful about perusing a rack of garments that have already had some experience living, I’m sure, a stylish life.  What kind of closet did this used to hang in?  Who all has worn this and where?  What’s this piece’s story? It’s great fun to think about.   The whole second hand shopping experience is more joyful and colorful for some reason.  Every selection feels that much more ‘special’.  You’ve had to work a little harder to get it, you feel like you’re getting a good deal and you know you have something the person next door won’t have in their closet.

Ideas and inspiration truly are everywhere and I always have this urgent (on the verge of obsessive) need to capture it in some way.  To either jot the idea down, to take a picture, to archive it, to elaborate on it…to DO something with it.

Am I missing the whole Zen-’ness’ of taking a nature hike by zeroing in on all the ‘active’ possibilities…….OR am I meant to be seeing these things and in turn doing something with what I saw?  Heck, I don’t know…but I have to admit I do always feel a bit more satisfied with how time was spent when I actually walk away with captured ideas in some shape or fashion.  There’s a sense of fullness.
